The present Hagia Sophia building is the third church built on this site. The first one was built under Constantine. The second one was built under Theodosius II. It was destroyed by fire during the Nike riot of January 532. Some marble blocks survived. The pieces with 12 lambs representing 12 apostles were part of a monumental front entrance. They were discovered in 1935.
