Apse the semicircular focus of worship at the eastern end of Hagia Sophia
Because Hagia Sophia was built as a Christian church, the congregation face east, not Mecca.
Above its center is the Apse Mosaic showing Mary with Christ Child. On the right is an uncovered mosaic of a seraphim.
