The Burghers of Calais

NYC, New York view map

Les Bourgeois de Calais (1889) by Auguste Rodin.
This large scale sculpture commemorates the aftermath of the siege of Calais in the Hundred Years’ War, when 6 leaders surrendered to Edward III of England for execution in exchange for sparing the city. They walked out on bare feet, with nooses around their necks, and holding keys to the city. Rodin depicted them not as a group united in sacrificial courage, but as individuals facing the pains of impending fates.
