Florence, Tuscany, Italy view map

The east bronze doors of Florence Baptistery (Battistero di San Giovanni) next to the Florence Cathedral.
Commissioned in 1425, it took Lorenzo Ghiberti 27 years to complete. When Michelangelo saw it, he called it the Gates of Paradise. The 10 panels on the door depict scenes from the Old Testament.

Great shot. Had the same problem with tourists, and, as you note, patience pays off in the end:http://www.pbase.com/chrisg_62/image/139341213

Susan & Judy,
The throng of tourists in front of the bronze doors may grow and ebb. When they thinned out, I was able to elbow into the front center position. I leaned back and shot the entire doors at 28mm equivalent wide angle. I corrected the perspective in post processing.

Dear Peter,

I am enjoying immensely reliving my own Italian travels through your wonderful photos. You have a fine lens and a fine eye for compostion. Looking at Ghiberti's wonderful doors - (cleaned since last time I saw them) - I see your determination as well. How on earth did you take this image without all those tourists milling around? Complimenti!

I don't know how you got this shot without all the throngs of people all over it. Good job!
