Florence, Italy

view map

East door of the Baptistry of St John, facing the Duomo.
Probably one of the most famous doors in the world.
Called the Gates of Paradise by Michaelangelo, they were made by Lorenzo Ghiberti, who took
21 years to complete them in 1422.
The doors are actually copies, installed in 1990 in order to preserve the originals in the
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.
There is another copy, made in the 1940s, in the Grace Cathedral, San Francisco.

Must've been a goosebump moment to see these in person. Here's a link to a shot of the copies at Grace Cathedral in SF: http://www.pbase.com/milholland_p/image/135067556

I have seen the San Francisco ones and the detailed relief is just amazing.
