Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnake

Tucson, AZ

Crotalus atrox

I got a little adrenaline rush from this one this morning. I wasn't
paying attention and almost stepped on it. The snake gave me the
warning rattle and went under a water barrel --- I am thankful that
it only gave me a warning. I removed the water barrel and took some
pictures, with it rattling at me all the while. I relocated it to a
safer part of the yard and thanked it for the no-bite encounter. This
one is about 3 1/2 feet long and well fed (which is why I don't kill them).
