These images were taken at the El Morro Inscription Group in September 2014. The El Morro Inscription Group preserves messages written in sandstone dating back to the 1600s. The Spanish and later Americans carved their names and messages into the rock. The earliest inscription dates back to around 1605 although there are some Native American petroglyphs that go back earlier. Trail routes used to pass Inscription Rock due to a pool of water at the location that could be used to refresh travelers. An Ancestral Pueblo ruin (A'ts'ina by name) sits at the top of El Morro.
