The original facade of the Duomo was only completed in its lower portion and then left unfinished. It was eventually dismantled in 1587 and a competition for the design of a new facade was begun. The competition descended into scandal and the cathedral was left bare until the 19th century. Finally, in 1864 a new competition was held to design a new facade, a competition that was eventually won by Emilio de Fabris. Work began in 1876 and was completed in 1887. The neo-Gothic facade is done in white, green and red marble and harmonizes with the campanile and baptistry.
