Penrose 07318.JPG

Kingston, Ontario, Canada, a UNESCO World Heritage Destination view map

Construction, by convict labour from the nearby Kingston Penitentiary, of The Rockwood Lunatic Asylum for the Criminally Insane commenced in 1859, was completed by 1870 with its first patients moving in as early as 1862. Architect William Coverdale designed the building, with for the day, larger rooms, 9x9', larger windows and more substantial common areas. It also had Canada's first central heating plant, installed as a safety measure to eliminate potential fire issues. Renamed Penrose some time in the 1900's the institution was finally closed in 2000 and the building is for sale.

Is there still a guarantee on the pool? ...Better ask b-4 than after buying. :) Must be fun to get inside.

It's haunted. I would love to go there and hunt for ghosts. Beautiful photo! V

A great looking building but what went on there probably makes it feel heavy. I'm wondering if it is haunted. :)

Even better than the other photo of it. A photographers dream. Hope they save this buliding.

Lunatic Asylum for the Criminally Insane - the name brings fear. And I'd hate to think about how the patients were treated in there over the years...
It is an attractive building
