Percebes—rock barnacles—are one of the most treasured delicacies of the northern coast of Spain. The percebes are gathered from wave-struck ,rocky cliffs by daring harvesters. It is said that many have lost their lives in pursuit of these ugly, tiny morsels of delectability.
The Costa da Morte derived its name in part from this dangerous occupation.
