I worked for Charles overly studios from about1993 to 2000. He was a prolific illustrator of colleges and historic sites. Many of his drawings were reproduced. Some were also reproduced and then watercolored by artists like myself. Also just because it has Charles overly studios or overly publishing printed on it does not mean it was done by him. (in fact this means it it obe of the reproductions, they all had that printed on them) We did many drawing for school and colleges and reproduced them to be sold at campus stores, these other drawing should be signed by the artist who did them, even if they have the overly name printed on them.

I recently purchased at a thrift store a 9x11 pencil sketch (the best that I can tell) by Charles H Overly.On the left bottom in beautiful script is,"U.S.Frigate Chesapeake Built 1799 at Gosport Shipyard Portsmouth Virginia",on the bottom right his signature.The shade- ing and detail are breathtaking,I can't stop looking at it!It is done on heavy stock paper but looks as if it has been cut to this size following pencil lines on the back.Any feed- back is greatly appreciated.

i am a collector of the art and overly or overley is one of the lost american legends.all of his work was done as a lad all across the united states and he had a great passion for architecture this was a maine vocal point for majority of his work and you will find that he takes great pride in the details of the buildings some are as if you can acciouly tell as to where the sun is positioned by the shading so you can almost get a time of day as to when the drawing took place i would say anyone that is holding on to any of his work should treasure it and only sell for the highest price possible!... depending on the shape of the frame i would say without doubt that almost all of his work should start at a good art auction for a minimum of 250.00usd and negotiations only start from that point. i hope if any of you do decide to sell you shall call me imediately and i will pay 500.00usd for any of his work right now. thank you! chris braddock

R.E. Charles H. Overly; I had the opportunity to look at a nice Overly "Sketch" and at first glance it appeared to be a pencil drawing. All one needs to do is look at the drawing with a magnifier and if the drawing has dots then is is a halftone print if it looks still to be a drawing a more powerful glass is need to see if it is lead or ink. I have 2 drawings not previously listed. One is "The Trustees' Office Shakertown at Pleasant Hill Harrodsburg, Kentucky". The second is "The Meeting House Shakertown at Pleasant Hill Harodsburg, Kentucky". They have been matted but never framed. They were found amoung a deceased family members belongings and we do not know if they may be of true value or if they may have been purchased as a momento from a trip. Well either Charles H. Overly lived a very long life or some Charles must have had a since of humor. I have two pincel drawings, both are ships - one called The Joseph Conrad - Uystic Harbor - Uystic Connecticut and one called Maturiicus Rock Light - Maine dated 1823. We bought them at an antique store on the Oregon Coast. From what I can find there is no Uystic Connecticut nor Maturiicus Maine. They are both originals and one is dated 1823 in old frames. So we have drawings posted on this website from 1723, 1823 up to 1916. Maybe someone should catch one of the antique road shows coming through town and get an appraisal and some history.

Hello, I have a pencile drawing signed by Charly Overly of the "The Old Worth Church" Boston, MA 1724. It is on textured paper and I do not see any dots when I look up close at the picture. I was checking on ebay but I do not see any of this exact picture for sell. I am just curious if I am holding a tresure or not! thanks!

I have 4 frames with 4 pictures that are signed and are just beautiful work of Mr. Overly. These frames are so old but are in relatively good shape. The glass in one of them is a tad cracked but all is well with the paper underneath. The pictures are OLD. They are not dated but look to be from the 1950s. They won't be any newer than the mid 60s. They are on textured paper such as would be used by a pencil artist. They're very nice. I'm almost 100% certain they are originals. I will be having them looked at within the next few days by a professional. If they are originals, I am sure that I will be given instruction on how to deal with them but if not, I will contact you again to ask again. These are very beautiful and I don't intend on seling them, however, I am looking to see when they were drawn and more information about the artist. Thanks so much!

Hello Everyone, I purchased from a re-sale store a large maroon folder with a equally large label (seemed very professional) stating "Four Sketched of Colonial Williamsburg" for framing-Produced for Williamsburg Restoration, Inc. By Charles H. Overly. Although there were only 3 of the four inside; The Capitol,Bruton Parish and The Wren Building. According to the information sheet inside the envelope I seem to be missing the Governor's Palace. I am wonder, for insurance purposes, are these reproductions worth anything? I will attempt to E-mail the other person mentioned a reply but a lot goes to my junk mail and I get alot. Thank you Sue

Apparently Charles Overly did pencil drawings of many college buildings. I just purchased two, which turned out to be reproductions, from Marietta College in Marietta Ohio; "Erwin Hall" and "The Presidents House." Signed but not dated. Very nice drawings, but probably not worth much.

Hello, Apparently there must be quite a few Overly "pencil sketches" out there. I was at a yard sale today, and inadvertantly bought 2 of them. They were inside 2 other pictures that I paid 6 dollars for. They do not have the dot or screen pattern to the lines of the sketches, but evidently they must be reproductions or fakes, because there seem to be quite a few other people who have the same sketeches the I do. All claiming to be original. Can you possibly enlighten us (me) as to how to tell the difference? Thanks for your help. By the way, I have 'The Capital, Williamsburg, VA and Bruton Parish Church'.

I have recently purchased four Charles H. Overly pencil drawings; of the four, one has a stamp at the bottom that reads, The Charles H. Overly Studio, Harvard, Mass. 01451. I know that is a copy, however, the other three are older on a much heavier stock with only the picture name and signature. I am curious as to the value and weather the three are originals. Thanks!

I have two Charles H. Overly pencil drawings from Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan. One is the Martha-Mary Chapel; the other the steamwheeler "Swanee". They are titled in the lower left and signed in the lower right. There is no date on the pictures. I would appreciate any information available on these. Thanks, Yvonne
