Thorny Chestnut.jpg

What is the purpose of the thorny outershell?
Imagine getting beaned on the head with one of these?

To protect and defend it from some animal or bird? Beautiful macro of this fortified nut!

Wow, I wouldn't want to be beaned with this either... interesting image and I see Boris and Jola do the same thing by keeping them in their pocket. I've never seen one like this!
Jola Dziubinska06-Oct-2010 23:36
Nice capture. I collect the inside nuts and keep them in my pockets for health.

I have been beaned with a buckeye (chestnut) before. And stepped on them with barefeet. Ouch. We played with these as kids and would make necklaces from the nuts!

Great shot, contrasting textures!
Cindi Smith05-Oct-2010 15:16
Yeah, that would hurt. What a difference in the two textures. Nature has a way of protecting things. Love the shot!

Superb close up, I guess they're quite tasty?
Mieke WA Minkjan05-Oct-2010 06:38
depends on the sort, if they are eatable then of course it is to protect a delicatessen!
great capture

Big! :-)

Very nice. We used to collect them to feed to the deer in winter.

MY FAVORITES; COLLECT THEM EACH YEAR AND KKEP THEM IN MY POCKET!!! :))

Ehm...the thornyshell must be to protect against the birds?
Love the image...

I didn't know chestnuts had such thorny shells. I definitely wouldn't want to be beaned on the head with one of these or be walking around barefoot anywhere near a chestnut tree!

What a great shot! I love chestnuts, outer shell is so spiny, the nut is so smooth. As a kid we played conkers with chestnuts! V
