Western Kingbird on nest - Kansas St. 6-28-07

While down in southwest Memphis, I came across this Western kingbird nest with a pair feeding young. No more than I turned the corner, another bird was seen flycatching and returning to a hidden nest. Evidently this second bird is still sitting on eggs as she never flew out again while I watched.

This makes the 4th location in Memphis that has active nesting Western Kingbirds. One nest site has 2 hybrid females paired with Western males, where the other three host only normal Western Kingbirds.

Update: Unfortunately the nest was destroyed when they installed a light on the pole. I found the nest in the street but no sign of the young.
