Neotropic Cormorant - -

Even though taken at 200 yards, through strong heat waves, the key points of the head structure and coloration can be seen in this photo. 1. Note the dark loral area. 2. The gular patch is dull and much reduced. The feathering under the lower mandible continues forward of the vertical line "a" and the angle formed by the feathering at the gape is acute not obtuse as in DC. This angle is usually bordered in white on adults in breeding plumage.

This bird was photographed at TVA Lake in Ensley Bottoms, Memphis. There have been four of these (last bird 8-19-2012) at that location. Standing next to Double-crested, the small, slimmer body and long tail stand out.
