Western Kingbird - MS- 7-03-04 - waiting

On July 3, I found only one of the Mississippi young being fed by 2 adults. This loss may partially be due to the number of Loggerhead Shrikes in the area. In Memphis the adult Shrikes feeding their young account for the loss of some young Western kingbirds and causes the kingbird parents to move their broods away from the original nest. The first nests in Memphis produced varying success and a lot of pairs end up with only one or two young surviving the first week. I've only seen one brood of four raised to full independence in Memphis.
