This large immature Slaty-backed Gull was a first for Mississippi and the Mid-south and one of the first immatures IDed in the lower 48. I took a few photos of it in flight and with Herring Gulls. It's ID sure had me scratching my head for a day. It stayed long enough for ID photos and a few lucky birders to enjoy but left on a cold front 3 days later. It had a stainless steel band on its leg, none of that type were being used in banding at that time in north America. The lettering was impossible for me to read in my Questar but I doubt I would have been able to read them anyway. Have you ever tried to read cyrillic characters backwards;o)
