Yellow-billed Loon - immature 3-6-04

After finding a second year Yellow-billed Loon at Pace Point for TN's third record, this immature showed up in my scope a week later for a fourth! Another bird appeared in my scope the following year off Point Road just across the river from where this bird was found. Records for YB Loon appeared in GA-TN and KY in 2003-2004 winter season. Here you can see the bill color on this immature is actually a pale, grayish pearl color at the base gradually becoming faded yellowish toward the tip with the outer 2/3 of the culmen light. The ear spot was never very obvious on this bird and you can barely make out this feature in this shot. I photographed another Yelow-bill in the Big Sandy at Port Road in December 2009 and another in the same area that stayed in the area for a few weeks in 2010. Probably no other area east of the Mississippi River has as many records.See more photos at Loon Page in gallery.
