This quick image demonstrates that the SB-800, with the flat flip down wide angle diffuser and plastic reflector extended is capable of lighting a subject at the 1:1 minimum distance. Shadows could be a problem.

The pine cone is approximately one inch long. Lighting could be improved with some foil or other reflectors.
