The USS Kidd was built in 1943 after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The destroyer saw heavy action in the Pacific theatre of World War II and sustained heavy damage. It was quickly repaired and returned to service. It was inactivated after the end of the war but recalled to service during the Korean War. In 1964 the USS Kidd was retired from service
In 1982 the ship arrived to a crowd at Baton Rouge to serve as a memorial to Louisiana veterans. Her mooring is unique in that half the year she floats in water of the Mississippi while half the year she sits high and dry
The USS KIdd is listed on the National Register of Historic places.
