The house is located a block from the center of the town square as founded in 1805 The house was built in 1899 by the prominent Bolton family. The house was donated to the city of Alexandria for the preservation of arts and culture and is now home (studio) to several artists as the River Oaks Square Art Center.

The house is located close to the Red River and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
