St Martin Parish - Breaux Bridge

Firmin Breaux an Acadian pioneer bought land in this area from the French land grant owner. In 1799 he built a footbridge across Bayou Teche. Persons giving directions back at that time were told to go to "Breaux's bridge" and so the name stuck.

The town actually was a result of Firmin's widow Scholastique, who drew up a plan and sold property which became what is now the city. Not many towns can claim that a woman was the driving force behind their development - especially in 1830

Breaux Bridge calls itself the "Crawfish capitol of the world" and celebrates this event every OTHER year.
