Houma officially became the seat of Terrebonne Parish in 1834. Construction of a new courthouse at the present site was begun in 1860 but the Civil War halted construction. That building was complete in 1875 and served until 1937 when the current structure was built.
Fourteen of the original twenty four live oaks remain on the grounds.
