By this time, I was a combat-photographer for the Associated Press. I resided in Danang City near the 1st Military Tactical Zone of the ARVN, covering the war activities from Sa Huynh, Quang Ngai through the DMZ in Quang Tri.
The Paris Cease-Fire Agreement went into effect on Jan 28, 1973 but the real cease-fire was only on paperwork. Both sides violated the signed document, trying to expand their controled territories. The bloody fight kept going on, even worse.
At one point, the VC allowed the international correspondents to go into their own zones to witness their military activities. By luck, I was randomly picked since I was the only AP personnel at the area.
Visiting an enemy site is dangerous. But I took the chance to have the feeling and the taste. Together with other journalists from ABC, NBC and CBS, we decided to accept the risk. And here is the only photo left from that stupid trip.
