My brother, Wesley Hay, grew up in Monida. I visited there in 1960 while it still had a small population. I am shocked at how few pictures of Monida are posted on the Internet. How could a state allow such a historic site to just disappear?? Most shocking when it sits right at the top of the pass and just off the main route and at the very border of Montana and Idaho. I even stayed at the old Monida hotel in 1960. What potential there was for a truck stop and travelers stop at the top of the pass. Sadly it is too late as too little was done to preserve the buildings and rich history when it was a railroad town surrounded by operating ranches and a small mining operation. I have found no pictures of the old general store (grocery) and none of the café (I do have one small picture of this café). I have seen no pictures of the interior of the old hotel. I was in that hotel several times and there were many very interesting antiques in there. Who got them?? What happened to that beautiful old train depot? I was raised in Washington state and in Santa Cruz, California but my brother and step dad used to talk about the history of Monida (My step dad knew soo much) and our vision to restore the town, repair the main buildings, and put up a truck stop, service station and travelers' rest stop and souvenir shop and small museum at the top of the pass. We even talked about running quaint wagon and jeep tours from Monida to West Yellowstone. What a tourist draw that "could have" been!!! The only thing we lacked was the "money" to do it and the people of Montana could care less. Victor Idaho was named after my great grandfather, George Victor Sherwood, and I have always valued history and my roots. My great grandfather had 16 children who all survived to adulthood, The grandfather who raised me was one of George Victor Sherwood's sons. I'd like to know why our country no longer values its past and its roots?? Depressed in Missoula, Montana, Joyce Y. Van Pelt (aka Sherwood)
