Your explanation is not exactly correct. In the 1-series cameras, the cross point sensors are sensitive ot both horizontal and vertical lines. The center point has cross point sensitivity up to f4, and the other six cross point sensors need f2.8 or larger apertures. All 45 points give single line sensitivity up to f5.6, but the center point gives single line sensitivity up to f8.
