An Ordovician Receptaculite (ree-sep-TACK-u-lite) fossil. Found just off a hiking trail on "Molly's Knob", in Hungry Mother State Park, near Marion, Virginia. Nikon SB-800 flash unit used with bounce and diffusion dome.

No high tech stuff here.....just a lot of luck and a good flash unit! This set-up was about as simple as you can get. The background is a medium weight napped fabric (which absorbs light), draped over a kitchen stool frame. The stool was sitting on a ping-pong table and the fossil was standing up against the fabric. I used a single camera-mounted SB-800 with the diffusion dome attached to provide bounce light off my ceiling (at a 60 degree angle). The only other illumination was provided by an overhead florescent light fixture.
