3-1-04 Travis Powers Memorial

This is one of those small roadside memorials just down the street from our house. You see them everywhere. This one is a little personal. On August 31, 2001 at about 10:00 pm a boy one month shy of his 17th birthday crossed the center line in his Honda Civic just as he peaked the hill. I swerved in my Caravan to miss him and watched in horror as he slammed head on into the car behind me. I turned and went back, my wife and I jumped out and ran to the cars...and we were with young Travis Powers as he died. I had never seen him before in my life, but today his family are dear friends. He was only about a half mile from his house when it happened. His friends still maintain this little cross on the corner, just down from where he died. The other boy, a college student was saved by the airbags in his tiny Honda Del Sol and survived multiple broken bones.

Wow. I don't know what to say really. I think having you by him could only have offered comfort. Beautiful and moving tribute. When a photo makes me get tears in my eyes, I know it's a good one. This is very good. I'm sorry for his family!

I was initially just going to comment on how well you have processed this image, and yes, it is outstanding. Then I read your story. Then I realise a mere 'well done' seems to pale into insignificance. A tragic story indeed - even as strangers it must have affected you so much. Your image is a fine tribute. ~~~Ray.

What a powerful image and story. I am so sorry you had to go through such a thing. It sounds as if you've come to a place of peace. May God be with you.

You are right. We pass by those markers all the time. Thanks for putting the story behind one of them.
