The vivid colors of the homes relate more to the need to provide visual interest

An important feature of Longyearbyen is the Global Seed Vault, an underground
cavern providing a secure seed bank to preserve a wide variety of plant seeds
from around the world in case of large scale regional or global crises.
Due to possible contamination, visitors are not allowed to visit the vault.
