This is an area where a black lava shelf has eroded into pockets and pools. The pool most commonly called Queens' Bath is just to the left of center in the shaded area. Large ocean swells cause these pools to fill and drain constantly. Rough water and rogue waves make this an extremely dangerous area in which many unsuspecting victims have drowned, including one of my friends two years ago, and two girls a week before this photo was taken.
