This lighthouse had two predecessors. The original tower collapsed in 1593 and a replacement tower was a failure, collapsing during construction. It is the oldest structure specifically built as a lighthouse in the Netherlands, but fires were displayed from its top for only about a decade. It then waited more than 200 years before fulfilling its original purpose of guiding ships through the Zeegat van Terschelling into the Waddenzee and Zuiderzee.
In 1907, this tower became the first lighthouse in the Netherlands to be electrified. Today it is probably the most famous lighthouse in the Netherlands. The first floor is used as a wedding chapel.
