Warmth
Muar, Malaysia - September 2007

This man warmly welcomed us. He was extremely proud of his mee bangdun and showed us pictures of the prime minister enjoying his food. He gave us a sample. It was too spicy for me, but my friend Phil, who lovesss spicy, said it was good.

Tim, I posted an image I made of this same man in my gallery http://www.pbase.com/image/98078309) and I just wanted to say how well your image portrayed his wonderful personality even though our photographic approaches were so different. You concentrated on making a head shot whilst I included much of his environment in my image. But as simple as yours is, his smile, his rounded features and the happy glint in his eyes were enough to tell us how very warm and friendly he was.

I agree....this man's face exudes kindness and he seems to be deriving pleasure, not only from his craft, but from having his picture taken.

Thanks to both of you for your comments. Warmth so completely captures this man's spirit.

I'm really drawn in by this man's face. I'm intrigued to compare it to your image in the Singapore gallery of "Preparing for Lunch". In that image a young man wears western-style chef clothing and hat and has an intense expression. I imagine his attention to detail makes many great meals. In contrast, this man's face is relaxed and he appears completely at ease in his kitchen. I imagine his meals emphasize great flavors and warmth. Both are beautiful images!

I forgot to add a plaudit to his spice. I can still feel the burn.

I like the kindness in his face -- you chose to limit your frame to his persona, while I chose to place him in the context of his work in my own image of him athttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/86311429 This chef was very kind to us, and very proud of his craft. In your image, we get to meet him eye to eye. In mine, we are observers, and he is the performer.
