Hope at the Killing Fields
Killing Fields Memorial, Outside Phnom Penh, Cambodia, January 2008

People are moved when they visit. Here someone has left origami cranes as a prayer of peace.

What a horrifying image. The presence of the origami cranes only heightens the sadness for me. I'd like to see it as a sign of hope, but against the skeletal horrors, I can only wonder how many cranes it will take for us to finally get it.

This is done at the site of the atomic bomb blast in Hiroshima, Japan, as well. Twenty seven years elapsed between these twin horrors. Why must history continue to repeat itself in this brutal way? Your use of a Japanese memorial here echoes this point.
