When I was fourteen my brother took me on a trip to Washington, D.C. On the way we visited several Civil War battlefields including Gettysburg. I can recall feeling a strangeness in my gut as we drove through the place where so many people had lost their lives. I had a similar response to our overnight stay in Phnom Penh. We visited the Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum as well as other places in the city. Most often my images and my galleries focus on the things I see that lift my soul. This gallery has many images that make my soul cry. The horror of what happened in Cambodia seemed to color my spirit. I applaud the people of Cambodia for not shrinking from, or hiding, this awful era in their history, but rather to honor the dead by paying tribute and to dramatically remind us to not let this happen again. |
