Might be a good idea to carry a bit of wax paper with you next time to put over the flash as a filter. Will take the harshness out of the flash but still give plenty of light.

Thanks Phil for the comment. This was one of those tough lighting situations that required the flash because she was looking down a tunnel of tires with only back lighting from the sky. Very little light was on her face, and with my exposure settings being metered for the sky, she would have been a complete silhouette had I not used the flash. Even using evaluative metering which left the sky blown out and pure light grey required flash to show her face.

Nice frame, Mike. The lighting on her face has a studio quality to it -- it looks as if flash has been used out doors to fill in any shadows. Unless the face is so dark that key detail is lost, I usually suggest avoiding flash if you want your image to have a natural look to it. Soft shadows on a face can enhance such a natural look.
