Close to 8:00 pm on Sept 10, and the sun is almost entirely gone behind the trees, and still
there were outdoor portraits that needed to be shot. This shot features the Bride with an
attractive groomsman and bridesmaid that he had earlier escorted during the wedding ceremony.
At this time of early evening, the flash must do more than just highlight. It must illuminate
the subject as well without creating huge shadows, hot spots and overexposures. I wanted to get
good exposure on the skin tones, not overexpose the dress, and still have some light left to
illuminte the deep red flowers below. A daunting task. Using a Canon 580ex flash with
back flash card extended and angled at 75°, mounted about 12" above the lens with a
QRS-35 custom flash bracket, I set my 20d on Manual f/4.5 and 1/125sec.... custom flash
exposure set to -1/3. What you see is the result of the effort.
