Ring Around The Moon 80582

aka 'Icebow'

This is an optical phenomenon caused by ice crystals in cold cirrus clouds located high (510 km,
or 36 miles) in the upper troposphere. Light is reflected and refracted by the ice crystals and
may split up into colors because of dispersion, similarly to a rainbow. (from the Wikipedia)

Saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) in the foreground.

Photographed in the Sonoran Desert north of Mesa, Arizona USA.

other sizes: small medium original auto

Very nice! thanks for the write up, without it I would have assumed that there was some processing involved to achieve this effect, the fact that this was created by nature makes this image even more unique. V
