This reminds me of Plato's prisoners, chained in a cave, unable to turn their heads. The prisoners see and hear only shadows and echoes cast by objects that they do not see. The "real" person in this picture, though, doesn't see the shadow looking at her. And of course anyone looking at this picture can't really see the person behind the shadow. For that matter, the face of the woman is turned away from us, so there's a bit more mystery here, too, and maybe a bit of voyeurism, too, heightened by the shadowed photograher.
