Red-tailed Hawk

Lake Co, TN

This is an adult Eastern Red-tail. Light-morph Western (race 'calarus')birds can be very similar, but differ in several subtle respects. The wings of Western's are a little longer, so usually project slightly beyond the tail when perched (this is subjective though, as an Eastern with wings drooped can as well). Western's tend to be heavier marked than this below, with barring on the lower belly and leg feathers, and a light rufous wash across the underparts as well. If seen well, the tail is typically banded on Western adults, with Eastern's only having a single dark subterminal band.
