The darker mantle and larger size were what drew me to the bird 1st, while Jeff saw the red and black bill spots right off the bat. This is only my 2nd California, and 1st adult. It's subtle, but the legs of California Gull are somewhat shorter than those of Ring-billed, and it's a very attenuated, long-winged gull.
