In this image, the California is the 5th bird from the right, and the difference in mantle color is apparent against the Ring-bills that are at the same angle. This difference could change in a split second as the birds turned, with the Ring-bills taking on the same dark tone as their angle changed.

Also notice the smaller size of the California compared to the smudgy second-winter Herring Gull sleeping to the left.
