Black-capped Gnatcatcher

Montosa Canyon,Santa Cruz Co AZ

Melody showed what a great guide can do with this bird. There hadn't been any Black-capped's reported much at all lately. So, we went to Montosa Canyon, in the midday heat, and tried since it was our only shot. We waited around the best area, and after maybe 10 minutes heard some distant Gnatcatcher fussing. Took a little while, but two Black-capped came right by us and continued up the wash out of sight.

Amazingly, this is the exact spot we had the bird when I was with the KY group a few years ago. Bad photo of a distant bird, but the really long bill shows well.
