NICKEL PLATE #763 BERKSHIRE-3318.jpg

Nickel Plate 763 was built by Lima in 1944, and was operated across Ohio in fast freight service. When NKP dieselized its road power in 1958 the 763 was stored in the yard at Bellevue for future donation to that town. However, after the 1964 merger of NKP into Norfolk & Western, N&W took the steamer to its headquarters city of Roanoke where 763 had been displayed. It has now been bought by the Ohio Central Railway Systems for $125,000

Looks like an abandoned train out in the old west. This Nickel Plate is the recent acquisition of the Ohio Central located in Coshocton, waiting to be restored. It should take close to 3 years for the complete restoration.

Wow you've sure captured the dark and powerful mood of these Berkshires in this series. They were a real workhorse from my understanding (which is very limited) but these are one of my favorite locomotives. Sad that the weight of these steam trains led to their demise, because there has never been anything like them since. When I was 2-3 years old the last of these steam locomotives were retiring. I can still remember hearing the whistle late at night across the valley where we lived, probably the most lonesome sound on earth. These shots bring back a lot of memories...thank you

My hopes are that 763 will someday come back to Roanoke to visit, under its own steam. I once offered to volunteer to do cosmetic work to "spruce up" what was once the Queen of NKP but it never got anywhere. I almost hated to see it leave, but if it meant that it would run again, I'd bit it a fond fare well and hope to see it again when it's up and running.

Marcia, great shot and great story. Also, the perfect placement of the cloud above the smokestack makes it look like old 763 is back in action, billowing out soot and ashes.
