St. Cecilia, patron saint of music as martyred here in AD 230

The church was founded on the site of her house in the fourth century.

Her body was discovered in the Catacombs of San Callisto and reburied here

in the 9th C. In 1599 Maderno created a beautiful statue of the saint using

her miraculously preserved remains as a model.
