candlestick mold

Any and all left-over fat, produced in the daily cooking,
would be used for candle making. The fat was poured into these
molds to set, and then used for lighting.
However, since the candles were made from an edible food source,
as soon as they were snuffed out at night, they would have to be
secured in a small wooden box on the mantlepiece, to prevent them
from being eaten by mice!

Makes you realise how wasteful we can be these days!! Fascinating bit of history.
