Hungry Hills

There's still some snow on the mountains, making for very pretty scenery.
I would, no doubt, have gone up there to take some photos at the weekend but for the fact that I was recovering from a cold.
And I'm really glad I didn't for a reader sent us in some pictures of foals which starved to death on the mountains during the recent bad weather.
The problem of horses and ponies being left to fend for themselves on the mountains has been raised by rescues and over 30 horses were removed by the Department of Agriculture and local council a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately some remained and a number of them perished during the cold spell.
And the horses which were removed could be put down unless they are reclaimed by their owners or find a place in the already overcrowded animal rescues.

That's such a pretty, tranquil scene accompanied by such an ugly, disturbing story.
Sorry to hear that you have yet another cold; you seem to attract them like a magnet. (If viruses were magnetic, which of course they aren't. But the analogy holds.) I hope that your summer holds far fewer of them.

Nice picture sad story.

Great scene but a very sad story about the horses, hope the surviving ones find a good home.

the attractive view certainly belies the tragedy of those deaths..the harsh winter has taken a big toll of livestock in Ireland and the UK..

That snow seems to be disappearing very quickly. Good news for the creatures that managed to survive.

Beautiful, but savage, nature: not helped by man's occasional inhumanity.... I hope you are feeling better....

The beauty hides the harshness of the climate and your story. It's a shame that some people fail to care for their animals.

A gorgeous scene and capture. I'm so saddened to hear about the horses left on the mountain. V.

These hills must be pretty high to still have snow on them. A pretty scene and I like the contrast of the greening fields with wintery looking mountains. V.
