One of the most famous heroic tales tells the story of the
'Tain Bo Cuailnge' or the Great Cattle Raid of Cooley.
Spurred by jealously of her husband's superior bull, Queen Meabh of Connaught sends her army eastwards to capture the Brown Bull of Cooley.
As the warriors of Ulster lie sick due to a spell, only Cuchullain, stands in
the path of the advancing army.
He challenges them in combat, slaying his boyhood friend, until he too is fatally wounded.
The bulls too clash, with the Brown Bull of Cooley killing the White Horned bull from Connaught.
This bull, however, lives peacefully with his family in a field near our house. All the same I was glad that there was both a barbed wire and electric fence between us!
