iPAD?

I've got a new toy which, in theory, should make PADing easier. My new iPhone 4s has a 8 megapixel camera - about the same as my first digital point and shot. And like a P&S it can fit in my pocket or handbag (but given the size of my current handbag, so can my DSLR). I'm not convinced that taking a picture with a camera phone involves the same skill as taking one with a DSLR, although of course there's the old argument that the best camera is the one you have with you.
People like Annie Leibovitz and the picture editors of The Guardian and The Irish Times who have praised the new iPhone for its photographic capability certainly add to its creditability and no doubt it is a very discreet camera for news and street photographers.
This quick shot which I took after attending a council meeting this morning is certainly colourful but I'm not so sure if it's well composed, although as luck would have it the poles and wires happily conform to the rule of thirds.

Love all the color in this photo!

I like the shot well enough but don't care for the colour cast. But it is the photographer who counts.
A couple of people are using the Samsung Galaxy SII on the pattern challenge and the quality of some of their shots is amazing.

I like it!

Nice result with the iPhone and Hipstamatic. The quality is very good.

I like the image for the most part but do you really have green roads in Ireland?
Neal Nye17-Jan-2012 12:15
Well, I suspect you could get good shots with anything! This is a very charming image!

It has a good vanishing perspective and the retro style edit makes the colours pop, with my SLR well a truly Goosed I too will have to get used to the point and shoot.

Irish enough to bring back memories, and great colours. Looks like a fine start with a toy you will like.

The iPhone is in good hands. Awesome image! ~V~

Unless they're painting the roads in Ireland green now, I'd think the WB leaves something to be desired. But its a nice shot otherwise of a charming spot

I may be tempted when my P+S Panny dies but the DSLR has made us learn about photography..can't see a phone camera doing that somehow. The quality looks good, Mairead, look forward to seeing more!!

any new photographic tool is to be considered...it seems the colour values have yet to be tamed though...doubtless 'there's an app for that'...intense traffic warnings here, and intense hues too..bravo Mairead for confronting the next technological wave..

I am tempted to get one because I don't even have a mobile phone of any kind. I never use them enough and they run out of battery or money or something. Is that colour natural to the phone .... it is very distinctive and I like it. It is sharp and clear. Can you play around with dof and shutter speed. They seem to the toy of the moment with my younger friends at work. Very interesting shot!!

I love the composition and the vintage film colors. I think it and the photographer did an outstanding job. V.

Well you know my feelings about iPhones - get the HDR Pro App and you will start to question if you need an SLR!! Especially having 8 megapixel and it will even show rule of 3rd grid to help you compose it.

The only way is not up.... apparently. I don't really care if it's an iphone a DSLR or a box brownie, it's what's behind the camera that makes the image.

I was waiting to see the commentary to see whether the vignette effect was intentional.
I've done a copuple of PADs with my Samsung Galaxy SII and they haven't turned out badly, but it's always going to be plan "C" (after the Canon and the Olympus). I think that the optical quality of any phone camera will degrade as the uncovered lens gets lugged around more, but more importantly attempting to exert any manual control over the "camera" is just so fiddly. But I do agree with your central point; if the phone camera is all you have, it's much better than not getting the shot at all.

We appear to be going the wrong way :)

An iPhone! Is this a new toy?
That row of bungalows looks similar to the older fishing villages I've seen in Scotland.
