Irish wheaten soda bread differs from most breads in that it's made without yeast but with baking soda and buttermilk. This is shop bought bread although I can make my own. I just don't have time to bake on a regular basis and buttermilk isn't available in all supermarkets. My mother made delicious bread with fresh buttermilk, either from our own farm or a neighbour's, and the bread tasted great with homemade butter.
This I ate with a small Irish breakfast - I just had some grilled rashers (bacon), a sausage and a couple of slices of black pudding. The real 'full Irish' would also include fried eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, potato bread and fried bread.
