Dave Eggers burst on the literary scene with his brilliant post-modern memoir 'A Heartbreaking Work of Outstanding Genius' in 2000. Two years later came his first novel 'You Shall Know Our Velocity!' which follows the adventures of two friends as they travel to several countries with the aim of giving away an unexpected windfall which one of them has received from having a photograph used as advertising. This proves more difficult that they had envisaged as they have decided that they shall only give the money to people whom they feel are deserving and the whole book has a decidedly surreal feel to it.
