Flowers for the Fallen

A bunch of flowers on a cold frosty morning was the only sign that just over 24 hours previously a 35 year father of three had been gunned down as he sat in a taxi. Christmas wreaths and trees decorated the houses in the quiet residential estate where neighbours were coming to terms with the terrible tragedy which had taken place on their doorstep. One woman described how she screamed down the phone as she looked out her window and told the police what was happening on the road below.
A man who walked into a police station a short time later is due to appear in court tomorrow. The taxi driver and a 21 year woman who was also in the car were also injured.
The shooting was the front page story on several papers today and will be on our paper as well. Sadly such killings are not as unusual in Ireland as they once were but there's a sense of shock when it happens close to home.

What a tragic story of this mindless act of violence. How horrible for the children.

A horrible thing to happen. The flowers are a nice tribute but I'm sure you all will have this sad story in your minds for a while.

This is terribly sad to happen at any time of year; especially to such a young family man.
lou_rozensteins12-Dec-2011 22:35
Shocking event, and a great documentary shot to commemorate it.
exzim12-Dec-2011 22:35
At least no paramilitary involvement according to the Irish Times. Looks like family dynamics at work, but even more tragical in that case.
Karen Stuebing12-Dec-2011 22:32
What a horrible event to live through. These flowers make a powerful image and tribute.
Kevin Chester12-Dec-2011 22:18

a heart-wrenching tragedy...the modest memorial seems drenched in sadness...such events should never happen, yet sadly they do..
Brian Samuel12-Dec-2011 22:12
Yikes, and to happen so close. It's the sort of thing that I'd only expect to hear about on the news.
Johnny JAG12-Dec-2011 22:09
A simple tribute but still powerful
